How to Search Gwinnett County Court Records

The official starting point is the Gwinnett Courts case-search page. That page separates the major search paths instead of sending every record to one index. Superior Court, State Court, Magistrate Court, and Probate Court estate matters route to the Tyler Odyssey Portal. Statewide provider access is available through re:SearchGA. Traffic and ordinance cases handled by Recorder's Court use the separate Recorder's Court eCourt portal.

Before searching, identify the court and record type. Felonies, divorce, adoptions, equity, and land-title matters point to Superior Court. Misdemeanors and many civil matters point to State Court. Smaller civil claims, dispossessory cases, warrant applications, and preliminary hearings can touch Magistrate Court. Traffic citations and county ordinance cases usually belong in Recorder's Court. Land records, deeds, liens, plats, and UCC records are clerk records, but they are not ordinary court case files.

1. Open the Gwinnett Courts case-search page and choose the link that fits the court or record type.
2. Use Odyssey for Superior, State, Magistrate, or Probate estate case records.
3. Use Recorder's Court eCourt when the matter is a traffic citation or county ordinance case.
4. Use re:SearchGA as a statewide provider route when county portal access does not return the expected case.
5. Call the court or clerk if the file is older, sealed, restricted, not yet indexed, or held by a different court.

The Georgia Courts e-access page explains that users may be redirected to provider sites for electronic court records and that account requirements can apply. That state-level warning matters in Gwinnett County because portal access and document access are not the same thing.

Gwinnett County Court Records Search Fields

Odyssey is the main case portal, but the research file did not capture a full live Odyssey result page. Gwinnett's Recorder's Court eCourt search fields were visible and give the clearest local field inventory. Use those fields for traffic and ordinance matters, and use the same care with names and dates when checking other court systems.

For Odyssey case records, avoid assuming that every document image is free or public. A docket may be visible while PDFs, exhibits, or sealed material remain unavailable online.

Types of Gwinnett County Court Records

Gwinnett County court records come from several courts. Superior Court is the primary trial court and handles felonies, divorce, adoptions, title to land, equity, declaratory judgments, habeas matters, and review of some lower-court errors. State Court handles misdemeanors and state-court civil matters. Magistrate Court handles civil claims of $15,000 or less, dispossessory matters, distress warrants, warrant applications, search warrants, and preliminary hearings. Probate Court handles estates, wills, guardianship and conservatorship matters, marriage licenses, birth and death certificates, weapons carry licenses, and sensitive mental-health proceedings.

Recorder's Court is separate from Odyssey for many public searches. It handles Gwinnett County traffic citations and county ordinance violations written by Gwinnett County Police, the Sheriff's Department, Georgia State Patrol, Georgia DOT, Animal Control, Planning and Zoning or Inspection, Business License, and Environmental Health. Juvenile Court is also a separate court function, but juvenile case records are restricted compared with adult court records.

• Civil records: complaints, answers, motions, service returns, orders, judgments, garnishments, and appeals.
• Criminal records: charges, warrants, bond, arraignment, pleas, motions, hearing settings, disposition, sentence, and costs.
• Domestic records: divorce, family violence filings, adoptions, and related orders, with some records sealed or redacted.
• Probate records: estates, wills, guardianships, conservatorships, marriage records, and vital-record functions.
• Traffic and ordinance records: citations, case numbers, charge text, statute, court date, plea, fine, and payment status.

What Gwinnett County Court Records Show

A court record is more than a name search result. It usually ties a person, entity, or estate to a court, a case number, a filing or citation date, a set of events, and an outcome. Criminal and traffic files may also show statutes, charge levels, bond amounts, warrant or citation numbers, fines, and probation or sentence entries. Civil files focus more on parties, claims, service, motions, orders, judgments, garnishment entries, and appeals.

That state framework helps set the broad access rule, but court-specific rules still control sealed files and protected case material.

Public Access to Gwinnett County Court Records

Georgia's Open Records Act presumes access to public records unless another law or court order protects the material. The key practical rule in Gwinnett County is custodian choice. The county open-records page lists departments such as the District Attorney, Police, Recorder's Court, Sheriff's Office, and Solicitor's Office for open-records requests. It also says court records from the Superior, State, and Magistrate Court Clerk are not available through the county online GovQA portal.

For Clerk court records, use Gwinnett Courts, Odyssey, re:SearchGA, in-person clerk access, or the court/clerk phone line at 770-822-8100. For Recorder's Court traffic or ordinance matters, use eCourt or call 1-877-794-0988. For sheriff, jail, police, DA, Solicitor, or county department records, the county open-records path may be appropriate unless an exemption applies.

Restricted Gwinnett County Court Records

Some Gwinnett County court records are not public in ordinary online searches. Juvenile Court handles delinquent, unruly, dependent, and runaway offenses under age 17. Adoption files are confidential or restricted. Probate Court involuntary hospitalization and outpatient evaluation matters are sensitive. Public systems should also redact Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, protected identifiers, medical details, minor names, and sealed information.

Georgia also uses criminal history record restriction. The GBI record restriction page cites O.C.G.A. 35-3-37. For arrests after July 1, 2013, the person does not apply through GBI first. The request is routed through the prosecutor. In Gwinnett County, the District Attorney's Office, led by Patsy Austin-Gatson, lists record restriction resources for qualifying cases.

In-Person Gwinnett County Court Record Requests

Many Gwinnett County court records can still require direct contact with the right office. Clerk of Court Tiana P. Garner serves Superior, State, Magistrate, and Juvenile courts.
